What to Think About with Kitchen Design

kitchen design

There are so many ways to plan a new kitchen layout or design that it really takes some thought and effort as well as time for preparation.  A well-planned kitchen is a very different room than one that is just thrown together quickly in the process of remodeling.  If you want a kitchen that is put together well and flows with the rest of the house then you should think about a few different things that will dictate the type of materials and layout you want for kitchen cabinets, counters, and all the other major aspects of this important room.  You should plan your kitchen according to the type of atmosphere you want to create, what kind of activities are performed in the kitchen, and your usual work patterns related to cooking and cleaning.

When you think of the type of atmosphere you would like in a kitchen you can choose among a number of different options that can narrow it down for you.  Do you want an open kitchen that connects to the dining room or living room so that it looks complementary to those rooms?  Or do you want an enclosed kitchen that is more of a working space for cooking separate from the dining room?  You should also think about a color scheme for the kitchen cabinets, walls and trim that could be either a traditional wood feel or something more modern and unique.  The regular activities that take place in the kitchen can also determine other features that would be useful and allow things to function better.  Do you use the kitchen solely for cooking or for other things as well?  You can incorporate other activities in the kitchen such as a small work space or a low counter where children can do their homework.

Whatever design you choose for your kitchen you should always consider what is known as the “work triangle” which is a typical pattern flowing between the stove, the sink and the fridge.  The triangle form makes it easier and faster to get work done if these important items are placed well in terms of space and conform to the pattern that you feel most comfortable working in.  If you are able to create kitchen that is functional, attractive, and fits in well with the rest of the house then your careful planning with be worth it once you complete your remodeling project.
